TEMPESST IS THIS ALL THAT THERE IS?

TMR favourites Tempesst are back with another effortless psych-pop song, posing the question ‘Is This All That There Is?’ If you’ve come across the Australian alt-rockers before, you’ll know that they currently reside in London, although it was a recent trip back to their homeland that inspired the newest single. Frontman Toma was back in Australia this January, enjoying a quintessential beach day… "I was at Little Cove, a beach in Noosa," he recalls, "it’s a little stretch of beach near a national park, it was totally filled with people. I just sat there in this ideal setting and realised how strange people are, especially when they’re at the beach. I wrote about what I saw and how it made me feel." The new song has a timeless quality, like the sea, sand, and salt in the air, immortalising beach days whatever the year, the decade, or the century. ‘Is This All That There Is?’ is marked with the same apocalyptic anxiety that shaped Tempesst’s Doomsday EP, as portrayed through one of the new song’s many quizzical lyrics, 'What a bore to be obsessed with dying, like I'm the only one to put up a fight. / Do I give up? Is this all that there is?' The expansive instrumentals and sumptuous pop melodies frame the reality of our impending end in a way that seems refreshing; it’s almost reassuring to hear that these worries plague others. It’s a unifying breath of fresh air, tinged with grains of sand, straight off the beach in Noosa. - Hannah Thacker
